Driver Licensing Training System 13.10.25

The requirement for an online test to renew a Thai driver's license, particularly for an extension from a 2-year to a 5-year license, depends on several factors, including the specific type of renewal, the expiration status of the license, and potentially the individual Department of Land Transport (DLT) office [4] [5]. As of October 13, 2025, a new ministerial regulation approved on April 22, 2025, allows for online renewals without a physical fitness test under certain conditions, though this regulation will only come into effect 90 days after its official publication in the Royal Gazette [1].

According to www.iAsk.Ai - Ask AI:

Currently, for most renewals, including upgrading from a 2-year temporary license to a 5-year license, an online training course is generally required [2] [5] [6]. This training is completed through the official DLT e-learning system at www.dlt-elearning.com [1] [2]. The process involves registering, watching a training video, and confirming your identity to receive a completion certificate [2]. This e-learning lesson is applicable if the license expires in less than 1 year or for an early renewal of less than 90 days [2].

However, the necessity of a test beyond the training video can vary. Many recent reports indicate that for a standard renewal from a 2-year to a 5-year license, individuals often only need to complete the online training and then pass simple eye and reaction tests at the DLT office [4] [5] [6]. Some individuals renewing a 5-year license for another 5 years have reported being required to watch a video and pass an online test [4].

Specific scenarios where additional tests are required include:

License expired for more than 1 year but less than 3 years: A written e-exam is required, with a passing score of at least 90% (45 out of 50 questions correct) [3] [5].
License expired for more than 3 years: In this case, drivers must undergo training, pass the written e-exam, and retake a driving test, essentially starting the licensing process over [3] [5].

It is always advisable to check with your local DLT office for the most current and specific requirements, as these can sometimes differ by province [4].

Current Renewal Process (as of October 2025, pending full implementation of new regulations):

Online Training: Complete the required training via www.dlt-elearning.com [1] [2].
Document Preparation: Gather your original Thai ID card (or passport and visa for foreigners), current driver's license, a medical certificate issued within the last 30 days, and the online training completion certificate [1] [3] [6]. For foreigners, proof of residency or a work permit is also required [3] [6].
DLT Visit: Visit a Department of Land Transport office. It is highly recommended to book an appointment through the DLT Smart Queue app to avoid long waits [3] [5] [6].
Physical Fitness Test: Undergo a physical fitness test, which typically includes color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and a foot reaction test [3] [5] [6].
Submission and Issuance: Submit and verify documents, pay the renewal fee, take a photo, and receive your new license [1] [3] [5].
