Athens Political Activity The citizens of Athens exercised full legislative, governmental, supervisory, and judicial power. They passed laws in the popular assembly, decided on the distribution of executive and administrative powers among many large committees, elected officials, and controlled elected or randomly selected officials. The term of office of all officials was strictly limited, and they were subject to complete control by the social base and strict accountability to it. 61 A historically uniquely large portion of the citizenry was constantly involved in the governance of the community and controlled all aspects of government and administration.
