These conceptions of 'democracy' – be they conceptions of "representative democracy" in the tradition of the American Constitution, elite theories, or "minimalist conceptions" or variants thereof – strip themselves of their normative content and thus of the very core of the original guiding idea of democracy. They have grown out of radically anti-democratic resentments, but for reasons of power strategy, they do not want to call themselves what they are (i.e., essentially conceptions of electoral expertocracies, electoral oligarchies, or electoral autocracies), but rather want to retain the word "democracy." They declare themselves to be "empirical theories of democracy" and can thus always adapt smoothly to the realities of power.

Demokratie« in der Tradition der amerikanischen Verfassung, Elitentheorien oder
