What is the legislative ratchet technic? Even small changes to these adjustments can have enormous long-term effects, like a ratchet. Powerful economic interest groups – supported by large international law firms, think tanks, foundations, and the mass media – have the ability to continuously flood the legislatures of their respective countries or even the EU with draft laws. If only a small portion of these are successful, and if they can simultaneously protect small incremental successes against reversal through effective veto power, the cumulative effect of such initiatives will ultimately be enormous, without the public even realizing it.
