Nicos Poulantzas: It is a peculiarity of this state that it attempts to incorporate science itself by organizing discourse—as can be clearly observed today. This is not a simple instrumentalization of science and its manipulation in the service of capital. The capitalist state seizes control of the production of science, which thus becomes, down to its very core, a state science intertwined with the mechanisms of power. This applies not only to the so-called 'human sciences'. More generally, the state organizes intellectual work through a whole series of networks and channels that replace the function of the church; it subjugates the corps of intellectuals and scholars, which existed only in a very heterogeneous form in the Middle Ages.
