As early as 1786, Christian Daniel Voss (1761–1820) argued that the neologism "representative democracy" contained a contradiction in terms; consequently, this expression must be counted among the words without meaning. Nothing, Voss stated, was "stranger than the belief that a people that elects all the physical persons of its government, or for one or several branches of government, governs itself."Rather, by electing representatives, voters "enact a contract of complete submission"

Christian Daniel Voß (1761–1820)stellte bereits 1786 dar, dass die Wortneuschöpfung der
»repräsentativen Demokratie einen Widerspruch in selbst enthalte; folglich dieser
Ausdruck unter die Worte ohne Sinn gerechnet werden müsse«. Nichts sei,
stellte Voß fest, »seltsamer als der Glaube, dass ein Volk, welches die physischen
Personen seiner Regierung sämtlich oder für einen oder einige Regierungszweige
wählt, sich selbst regiere«. Vielmehr würden die Wähler mit der Wahl von
Repräsentanten »einen völligen Unterwerfungsvertrag vollziehen
